Living Proof That Diabetes Can’t Hold You Back

Hi, I’m Matt, and I’ve been living with diabetes for nearly 40 years. For decades, I was told to “take it easy,” to play it safe, to avoid pushing limits. But I’ve learned something powerful—your diagnosis doesn’t define your potential. Through Alpine Diabetes, I’m on a mission to show that people with diabetes can still climb mountains, take on extreme challenges, and live bold, adventurous lives.

My Story

I was diagnosed at 14 years old and spent years learning the ups and downs of managing blood sugar. As I got older, I refused to let it become an excuse. I started hiking, climbing, and eventually set my sights on conquering Colorado’s 14ers—mountains over 14,000 feet. It wasn’t always easy. I’ve faced low blood sugars on the trail, learned how altitude affects insulin needs, and developed my strategies to stay safe while still pushing my limits.
